about

Micro-Requiems was written in response to a series of photographs taken by John Willis at the parking lot of the El Paso Walmart during the days following the mass shooting there. Composed by Matan Rubinstein, Micro-Requiems premiered at Marlboro College in Vermont on January 26, 2020. The piece was conceived to manifest in two ways: as a collection of brief recorded pieces in an audio loop, each projecting from a speaker in a gallery space—one for each of John Willis’s photographs—and as a single concert work accompanied by projection of the those images,
with the sound of those recordings coming from speakers in the background, simulating the spatial properties of the speakers as experienced in the gallery.

The piece is in a way about a certain failure, surrounded as we are by impossibly oversaturated media coverage and a barrage of events, to mourn properly. Micro-Requiems is at once a musical expression of formalized public mourning and a sonic reflection of the limitations of public grief in the face of impossibly common violence.

The installation is scheduled for September 2020 at the Kayafas Gallery in Boston. There are several other manifestations of the project; the images can be seen at jwillis.net/22-micro-requiems/ and a book, titled "Requiem For The Innocent", featuring the images together with writing by poet Robin Behn, is published by George F. Thompson Publishing.
